The Ancient Olympic Games were athletic and religious celebrations, held every four years in the city of Olympia, Greece, historically since 776 BC. to 393 AD
In ancient times, a total of 292 editions of the Olympic Games were held. During these games the wars were suspended by a truce and were also used by various Greek-speaking historians as a chronological reference.
Origin of the ancient Olympic Games presents certainties but there are many legends.
In the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. Intensive activity aimed at the cult of body is also documented within the Minoan civilization (around 1500 BC), among which parallel gymnastics stands out (the famous vaulting over the bulls, bull-fighting), but also wrestling and boxing; the latter was certainly played previously in ancient Egypt and later found in the Aegean islands practiced by “children”.
The first mention of sporting games in Greek literature dates back to Homer, who, in canto XXIII of the Iliad, describes the funeral games organized by Achilles to honor the memory of Patroclus, killed during the Trojan War.
