Mixedmedia dyptic on canvas inspired by the greek figure of the Discobolus Townley and the concept of modern opulence.

The classic figure of the Discus Thrower represents a moment of extreme tension and harmony in the athletic gesture. In the work, the gesture of throwing the discus pushes and unbalances the athlete and his instrument, creating a strong dynamic tension between the two elements. The figure of the athlete is subjected to an accentuated torsion, while the disc is projected in the opposite direction, highlighting the power and precision of the movement. This extreme tension between the athlete and his instrument almost leads them to separate, suggesting a moment that borders on opulence and excess, embodying the search for athletic perfection.

In the “Opposites Attract Opulence”, the opulence and excess of the athletic gesture reach their peak at the moment of the throw, in which the athlete and the discus seem to sway on the brink of separation. However, this feeling of detachment and extreme tension is followed by a return to the essentiality and purity of athletic movement. After having come close to separation, the athlete and his instrument are reunited in a pure, precise and essential act, aimed at fulfilling a specific intent: the perfect throw of the discus.

This transition from tension to harmony, from opulence to essentiality, captures the very essence of the athletic ideal in classical Greek culture. The statue Discobolus therefore represents not only a physical moment, but also an evocation of the philosophy and aesthetics of ancient Greece, in which the search for perfection and harmony through athletic movement was considered fundamental for the elevation of soul and body.

In summary, the classic statue of the Discobolus masterfully captures the interplay between tension and harmony in the athletic gesture, representing the transition from opulence and excess to the purity and essentiality of movement, thus embodying the aesthetic and philosophical ideals of ancient Greece.
